Cutting Canvas

Creativity, Handmade, Painting

I saw great designs cut into canvas scrolling through Pinterest. I was inspired to make a small piece of canvas art for my kitchen, based on a pin I saw, and luckily I had a small canvas on hand. Notably, this was my first attempt at cutting canvas and I have many more projects in mind to try with this technique… stay tuned!

I started by printing out my design and tracing the outline with pencil onto the canvas. I then (very carefully) cut out the design using an exacto knife. I found it helpful to secure the canvas to the surface I was working on with blue painters tape to prevent the canvas from sliding or moving while being cut. Once my design was cut into the canvas I measure bright construction paper to fit behind the negative space, I chose blue for the text and purple for the wine cork screw but there are many options you can explore for this including fun patterns and textures. With the paper glued to the back side and securely in place, I flipped the canvas over and painted the edges with dark gray, blending near the center for a purposefully unfinished look. Overall, I think this was a good starter project and can be done with people ages 13+. Share your thoughts and ideas with me below
