Write on Your Walls: Chalkboard Wall

Chalkboard Ideas, Coloring, Creativity, Drawing, Handmade

As a kid I heeded my Mom’s warning to not write on the walls, but now that I have long since moved out, I am finally experiencing what it’s like to write on my walls!! Well.. on my chalkboard wall that is.

Believe it or not, I completed this project for under $10! Here’s how…

Home Decor: Using a pop of color

Creativity, Painting

Decorating is a way to personally connect with the structures and pieces of your home, handcrafting any decorations can help to forge or strengthen the connection you have with your home and the way you feel within in. To my fellow renters: I know it’s difficult to fully decorate when you can’t put holes in the wall or paint, but don’t fret you can still decorate your walls with your own personal touches.

When I hear that Michael’s craft store has canvases on sale, I’m always happy. Especially so, when the sale is on 10-packs! I spent a gloomy Sunday afternoon surrounded by my paints and good vibes and here are some of the results

Adult Color Books: Rough Seas

Coloring, Creativity

Fine-point sharpies come in handy once again! This interpretation of this “rough seas” coloring page was a lot of fun to color, and was completed after two sittings. Coloring is a creative outlet that encourages planning and creativity. Share your coloring experiences with me

Cutting Canvas

Creativity, Handmade, Painting

I saw great designs cut into canvas scrolling through Pinterest. I was inspired to make a small piece of canvas art for my kitchen, based on a pin I saw, and luckily I had a small canvas on hand. Notably, this was my first attempt at cutting canvas and I have many more projects in mind to try with this technique… stay tuned!

Refinishing for Under $30

Creativity, Furniture, Painting, Re-Finishing

If you have one or two pieces of furniture that don’t match the rest of your decor, don’t be afraid to take matters into your own hands and paint or stain to match!  I have limited resources in terms of space, time and financial means, so here’s how I achieved a high quality look on less than $30

Fine point sharpie coloring of 2 birds

Adult Color Books: Only 5 Colors

Coloring, Creativity

This coloring page was completed using only 5 colors (red, orange, green, blue, and yellow). I chose to use fine point sharpies for two reasons, they come in vibrant colors and they blend without looking streaky. You can find fine point sharpies at any craft store or online (click here)

Mr. and Mrs. coffee mugs

DIY Coffee Mugs for Under $15

Creativity, Handmade, Painting

Being on a budget meant that I had to get creative with a wedding gift for a dear friend. I was able to complete this look for under $15! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Oil-based Paint Marker Sharpies (colors of your choosing)
  • -Plain coffee mugs from the dollar store (microwave safe & dishwasher safe)
  • -Stickers or stencil
  • -Oven

I cleaned the coffee mugs to prepare them for paint, then I applied the stickers for each of the mugs. I chose to give these mugs as wedding gift, so I used alphabet stickers to form “Mr.” and20150713_142129 “Mrs.”

Once the stickers were applied, I used the oil-based paint markers to make dots around the letters, dense near the letter and becoming less dense as the pattern moves out from the sticker. 20150713_143016

Let the mugs dry for several hours or overnight, then it is time to bake them! Don’t turn the oven on to preheat just yet, instead place the mugs in prior to preheating to avoid heat cracking or damage. Bake the mugs at 450° degrees for 30 minutes and let them cool inside the oven before removing them. Check out my other DIY or handmade craft ideas under $15.

To Recap:

  1. Pick your marker colors, your mugs, and your stickers/stencils
  2. Clean the mug before applying stickers/stencils
  3. Draw your design
  4. Let it dry
  5. Place mugs inside cool oven
  6. Bake it at 450° for 30 minutes
  7. Let mugs cool inside the closed oven
  8. Enjoy your DIY mugs!
